Dear Bob:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the death of your cousin Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash. I appreciate you taking the time to bring this matter to my attention.

On your behalf, I have contacted Lee Rawls, Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations at the United States Separtment of Justice (DOJ). I have related your concerns to Mr. Rawls and requested his assistance in reviewing this matter. A copy of that correspondence is enclosed for your review.

[Note: Note the FBI response...]

I was also advised of your interest in Leonard Peltier obtaining parole from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. As you may know, I have made contact with the FBP on numerous occassions regarding Mr. Peltier's health, and will continue to offer whatever assistance I can in that regard. However, jurisdiction over the parole of federal prisoners is beyond my purview and my intervention would be inappropriate.

As soon as I receive a response from DOJ, I will get back to you. In the interim, if there is any additional information you would like to convey, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Again, thanks for contacting me.

With best wishes, I am

Sincerely,
Tom Daschle
